Pitbull did an interview with Miami’s El Nuevo Herald recently where he talked about his Bad Man Tour, his forth coming album, Climate Change, and some serious world issues.

Pocos residentes han dado a Miami tantos éxitos en tan poco tiempo como Armando Pérez – Pitbull. Entre American Music Awards, GRAMMYs, Billboard y otros premios de la música, el rappero cubanoamericano suma casi cien. Sus videos en la gran red tienen más de 9 mil millones de vistas y ha vendido 70 millones de sencillos. Sorprendentemente, para él las mejores cosas de su vida no son las que ha recibido, sino las que él ha podido dar. Así me lo reveló en esta entrevista.

Pitbull se presentará en el Sur de la Florida por partida doble. El domingo su gira The Bad Man Tour con Prince Royce y Farruko lo lleva al BB&T Center de Sunrise, y el lunes estará en el Seminole Hard Rock Live, en el evento Hard Rock Live Presents an Evening with Pitbull. “Y no podía estar más feliz”, dice con ese positivismo que le caracteriza. “Siempre es bueno estar en Miami y sentir el calor de nuestra cultura. Llevo tres semanas en gira por todo Estados Unidos y aunque la gente conmigo siempre es muy cariñosa, no hay nada como presentarme en el patio de mi casa. Aquí el calorcito es más rico. Ojalá mucha gente pueda venir conmigo a estos conciertos, porque conmigo sólo se pueden esperar sorpresas”.

Pitbull acaba de presentar el nuevo sencillo (Green Light) del disco Climate Change, el cual saldrá al mercado en el otoño de este año. Mientras me cuenta detalles de la recepción que tuvieron los sencillos anteriores (Messin’ Around con Enrique Iglesias y Bad Man, la cual estrenó en los GRAMMYs), se le escapa un “Wow!”. Y con admiración comenta: “Me acabo de dar cuenta que este disco será mi disco número diez. ¡Tengo doble razón para celebrar!”.

“Yo siempre escucho a los artistas decir ‘este es mi mejor disco’. Yo no voy a decir eso porque suena como estar repitiendo lo mismo. Sólo te voy a decir que me encanta grabar y que cuando uno hace algo con pasión, tiene que salir algo bueno. Esa pasión me lleva a que en éste, como en todos mis trabajos discográficos, haya mucha variedad de discos internacionales y la colaboración de buenos trabajos con grandes amigos”.

El nombre del CD en español significa cambio climático, y es una forma que el artista tiene de llamar la atención a un tema que en realidad le preocupa: “Si ven bien mis tres últimos discos, se darán cuenta que todos tienen que ver con eso. Sé que si me pongo a hablar del tema quizás no me hacen caso tan rápido, por eso le pongo música, ritmos buenos y allí meto mis mensajes para que, entre música y baile, la gente vaya pensando”.

El tema del calentamiento global es tan serio para Pitbull, que le molesta ver la indiferencia que tienen algunos líderes ante él: “La ironía es que todos los políticos están tratando de ser presidentes pero a ninguno lo escucho hablar de este tema. Sólo hablan de boberías. No tocan los temas más serios que están pasando por el mundo, como este”.

Cuando se le pregunta qué medidas se toman en su casa para apoyar la conciencia por el eco ambiente, Pitbull dice: “Muchas cosas, pero mi preocupación va más allá de eso. Hablemos de la gente que está acabando con los bosques en Brasil, cuando viajo veo desde el avión zonas en las que antes había agua y ya no hay, mira lo que está pasando en Flint, Michigan, San Paolo… El tiempo de esta entrevista es muy corto para darle la atención que merece este tema. Necesitamos mucho más tiempo para hablar de cómo vamos a educarnos y qué tenemos que hacer para encontrar una solución antes que acabemos con este mundo”.

Cuando le pregunté a Pitbull si con todos los logros acumulados en apenas 35 años aún le falta un sueño por cumplir me dijo: “Yo no sueño. Me despierto y vivo”. Sin embargo, después de pensarlo un poco, agregó que lo que más desea conquistar no está relacionado a recibir, sino a reciclar parte de lo recibido. Pitbull quiere llevar sus escuelas chárter SLAM (Sports, Leadersship and Management), las cuales se enfocan en deportes, liderazgo y administración, a más estados. “Ya tenemos en Miami, en Las Vegas, Nevada, pero hace falta tenerlas en todos lados”.

“Para mi la cosa que no tiene precio es cuando puedes ayudar a los chamaquitos en SLAM y los ayudas a progresar. Cuando puedes tener a jóvenes contigo y les enseñas a creer en ellos mismos y los ayudas a enfocarse en lo positivo. ¡Lo más grande de la vida es eso!”.

Very few residents in Miami have achieved as much success as Armando Perez – Pitbull. From American Music Awards, to GRAMMYs, Billboards, and many other awards, the Cuban-American rapper has received a sum of almost a hundred awards. His videos on YouTube have over 9 billion views and he has sold over 70 million singles. Surprisingly, for him the best things in life are not what he receives, but what he gives. As revealed in this interview.

Pitbull will be performing in South Florida twice. On Sunday, his The Bad man Tour with Fuego, Farruko and Prince Royce, will arrive at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, and on Monday, Pitbull will be at the Seminole Hard Rock Live for Hard Rock Live Presents: An Evening with Pitbull. “And I couldn’t be any happier,” he says with his signature positivity. “It’s always good to be in Miami and feel the warmth of our culture. I have three weeks to tour throughout the United States, and although the fans are always very affectionate towards me, there’s nothing like performing in my backyard. Here, the warm-weather is richer. Hopefully many fans can come out to see me at these concerts, because with me… only expect surprises!”

Pitbull has just released his new single, “Greenlight” off of his album, Climate Change, which will be released in the Fall. When I talk about the success of his previous singles, “Messin’ Around (ft. Enrique Iglesias)” and “Bad Man (ft. Robin Thicke, Joe Perry, & Travis Barker)” which premiered at the GRAMMYs, he lets out a “Wow!”. And admiringly he says, “I just realized that this record is my tenth record, so I have double reasons to celebrate!”.

“I always hear artists say, ‘This is my best album yet!’, so I won’t say that because it sounds like I’m repeating the same thing. I’ll just say I love recording and when you do something with passion, you create something good. That passion is what motivates me. So, in this record, and in all of my records, there is a great variety of international tracks and collaborations with good friends that did great jobs.”

The title of the CD is Climate Change, and it is the platform that the rapper uses to draw attention to a subject that worries him. “If you take a good look at my last three albums, you will notice that they all have to do with the climate. I know that if I started talking about that subject, everyone would ignore me very quickly. So I put it in music and good rhythm. So when people are singing and dancing along to my messages, they will start to think.”

The issue of global warming is a very serious subject for Pitbull, and it bothers him to see some political leaders ignore it. “The irony is that all of the politicians that are trying to become president, I never hear any of them talking about this issue. They only talk nonsense. They don’t touch on some of the most serious issues that are going on in this world.”

When asked about the measures that he has taken to support eco-awareness for the environment, Pitbull says, “Many things, but my concern goes beyond that. Let’s talk about the people who are destroying forests in Brazil. When I travel, I see areas from my plane that there was water before, but not anymore. Look at what’s happening in Flint, Michigan, and in Sao Paulo… the time of this interview is too short to give this issue the attention it deserves. We need much more time to talk about how we need to educate ourselves and what we have to do to find a solution before we leave this world.”

When I asked Pitbull if he has accomplished all of his achievement, or if he has yet to fulfill a dream of his, he told me, “I do not sleep. I wake up and live.” However, after some thought, he added that what he wants most is to be able to conquer what he has already done. Pitbull wants to bring his charter schools, SLAM!, which focuses on sports, leadership, and management, to more states. “We already have one in Miami, and in Las Vegas, Nevada, but we need to have them everywhere.

“For me, the thing that is priceless, is when you can tkae the little kids in SLAM! and help them to progress. When you can have young people with you, and teach them to believe in themselves and to focus on the positive. There is nothing greater in this life than that!”
